We have had students who have been unable to attend trips or have had to miss out sections of a trip due to the physical terrain.
One way we have managed to involve students is through technology. For example, we have had students blogging whilst they’ve been on a trip to keep their group member who was unable to attend involved and up to date with what was going on. Similarly, using things like WhatsApp or videos can allow students who can’t physically get to certain parts of a site to still communicate with their group and be involved in decision making or exploring a certain site. The use of technology in the field initially was quite divisive, but as a department we invested in some tablets and use those.
